The decision of the United States to pull out of the United Nations' Cultural and Education Agency comes as no surprise since Washington also made the same move in the past.

Steve Herman, White House bureau chief for Voice of America said Friday that the US decision could be mostly due to UNESCO's alleged anti-Israeli bias and doubts on its goals.

"This won't be the first time that the United States has left UNESCO. It happened back in the Reagan administration when they thought that the organization was too pro-Soviet... UNESCO has obviously been quite politicized for so many decades," he said.

Under UNESCO rules, Washington's withdrawal will become effective by the end of 2018.
