While North Korea has opened channels for communication with South Korea, its leader Kim Jong-Un is still not off the hook, an analyst said Friday.

Matthew Kroenig, an associate professor in Georgetown University, said he thinks the leader of the reclusive state is simply using the talks in a bid to ease sanctions imposed by countries such as the United States due to its nuclear tests.

"In the big picture, this is a pretty small step because the goal of South Korea, the United States, and the international community is to get Kim Jong-Un to give up his nuclear program," he said in an interview on ANC.

Kroenig also warned that despite the talks, North Korea is likely to conduct more nuclear tests.
