The rainy weather has stalled the delivery of government subsidized rice to markets, the National Food Authority said Wednesday.

Ships carrying the staple from Vietnam and Thailand have arrived at the ports of Manila and Cebu. The ships' crew, however, have deferred unloading the rice out of fear that it will be soaked and spoiled by rain, NFA spokesperson Rex Estoperez told radio DZMM.

When the weather improves, it will take 2 days to unload the delivery, take it to NFA warehouses for documentation and finally deliver it to markets, he said.

The southwest monsoon or habagat has brought rains to large parts of Luzon and the Visayas since the weekend.
