MANILA - The situation in the Korean peninsula remains complex since other issues were left unresolved after the historic meeting of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, an analyst said.

Matters such as a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War and the reunification of the two Koreas, as well as the role of other global powers such as China in the region were still unsettled, said Aileen Baviera, president of the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress.

"Right now, we're only addressing the nuclear issues. What we need to look out for is how these other issues might also support or reinforce the commitments on the nuclear issue," she told ANC's Top Story on Tuesday.

She added, North Korea benefited more in the summit between the two leaders, as Pyongyang's decision to pursue talks with Washington amid the escalating word war between Trump and Kim worked to its advantage.
