Despite fielding an injured import, NLEX still managed to hand NorthPort a 123-107 beating in the PBA Governors Cup Sunday at Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Olu Ashaolu played through pain and scored 27 points, helping the Road Warriors get their second straight win in as many starts. He also brought down 13 rebounds even with a slight patellar tendon tear.
Larry Fonacier, Mac Tallo and JR Quinahan also provided quality minutes by churning out double-digit outputs.
Fonacier and Tallo each scored 14 points, while Quinahan had 12.
They did this even without coach Yeng Guiao, who is calling the shots for the Philippine national men's team in the Asian Games in Indonesia.
NLEX took advantage of a shorthanded NorthPort, piling up points for a 17-point lead in the first quarter, 34-17.
The Batang Pier rallied to cut the deficit to just 58-61 going to the third quarter, but Ashaolu conspired with Tallo and Michael Miranda to give the Road Warriors another 16-point gap.
Two straight treys by Kenneth Ighalo late in the game effectively took the fight out of NorthPort, which fell to its first defeat.
The Batang Pier obviously missed the services of Stanley Pringle who is also part of the Philippine national team competing in Indonesia.
