Former featherweight champion Honorio Banario wants to keep his streak going with hopes of one day landing another shot at ONE Championship glory.
On September 8, he will share the MMA cage with rising Singaporean fighter Amir Khan for a 3-round lightweight bout.
The fight will be the co-main event of ONE: Beyond the Horizon at Baoshan Arena in Shanghai.
A sixth straight win will bring him a step closer to a possible shot at the ONE lightweight crown.
“I just want to beat whoever they put in front of me. If that leads to another shot at the world title, then I’m OK with it,” said Banario.
“As a martial artist, I just want to work on my skills and test myself against the best. Amir Khan is a strong, young fighter.”
Before racking 5 straight wins, Banario had to lose the featherweight crown and absorb 4 more painful defeats.
He said the losses helped him realize his weaknesses.
Now a more well-rounded fighter with vastly improved grappling skills, Banario is more confident to trade punches against anyone.
He’s motivated than ever, even training despite the heavy rains that recently battered the country.
“Right now I’m working hard, despite the heavy rain and the cold. I’m in the gym training. I’m on the road running. This next bout is very important and I have to show that I am right to be considered among the best in the division,” said Banario.
“Amir is a young and hungry lion and he will be a very difficult opponent. I am prepared to go the distance with him, but I will be looking for every opportunity to finish the bout early.”
