One more hurdle, though — secure NBA clearance for Clarkson
(UPDATED) Jordan Clarkson has been given the green light by Asian Games organizers and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to join the Philippine men's national basketball team, a source privy to the Games delegation registration meeting discussing player eligibility told ABS-CBN News late Friday night.
Now, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard needs to hurdle one more obstacle before he can wear a Gilas Pilipinas uniform in next week's Asian Games in Indonesia.
After getting the necessary approval from Games organizers and the Cavaliers, Clarkson and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas must next secure a clearance from the NBA.
ABS-CBN News sought confirmation from the SBP regarding the OCA approval, but the sport's national governing body said nothing was official yet.
"That's what I'm hearing but waiting for official announcement," SBP president Al Panlilio said in a text message to ABS-CBN News.
Panlilio said as much to Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN News in her tweet.
The Philippines opens play against Kazakhstan in Jakarta on Thursday.
In announcing the 12 players comprising the Asian Games-bound Gilas side, Guiao reserved a spot for Clarkson, even though he and SBP officials weren't sure whether the Cavaliers guard would qualify.
"We put Jordan there since we (want to) make sure there's a slot for him. We're still working on the procedures. SBP officials and other concerned people are working hard on trying to get him to play for the team," Guiao said in article by Paul Lintag on ABS-CBN Sports, after the team's final practice in Manila.
