Pedrito Galanza Jr. scored 28 points to lead the Batangas City Athletics—Tanduay to a 95-90 win over the Quezon City Capitals—Black Mamba Energy Drink in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at Caloocan Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Batangas led by as many as 18 points and won its tournament opener wire-to-wire, but the Athletics needed to fend off the Capitals' fourth-quarter rally.
A 3-point play by Jojo Duncil narrowed the gap to 91-88 with 17 seconds to go, putting Quezon City in a position to complete its comeback.
But after Lester Alvarez split his free throws to make it a 2-possession game for Batangas, Hesed Gabo turned the ball over, wasting Quezon City's chance at further chipping away at the deficit.
Three free throws by the Athletics with 12 seconds left in the game ensured their win.
Dennice Villamor contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds for Batangas, while Alvarez added 7 points and 9 assists.
Galanza also finished with 5 3-pointers.
Jay Collado led Quezon City with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
