Mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor has submitted an application for a professional boxing license in Nevada ahead a planned boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett told that the Irish fighter filed papers on Thursday, although they were incomplete.

"Conor is intimately familiar with our licensing procedures, having fought here multiple times for the UFC," Bennett said.

"When he has time, and all sides have come to a contractual agreement, I'm sure he will fulfill our requirements, and we look forward to having him fight in Nevada."

The development came a day after UFC president Dana White announced that McGregor signed a deal for a fight against Mayweather.

Mayweather has been tight-lipped about negotiations after earlier being quoted as willing to give the fans "the fight they want."
