MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) is set to make some changes to the UAAP schedule when it hosts the league's 81st season starting in September.
NU officially accepted hosting duties on Wednesday afternoon from Season 80 host Far Eastern University (FEU).
"NU is proud to accept the hosting of UAAP Season 81. We would like to take this opportunity to commend FEU for a job well done," NU president Teodoro Ocampo said during the closing ceremony at the FEU Auditorium.
Speaking to reporters after the event, NU executive Nilo Ocampo revealed that as early as now, they are already planning to bring back ballroom dancing as an exhibition event, while keeping the street dance competition and 3x3 basketball.
"We'll continue with the 3x3, we'll continue with the street dance competition, both juniors and seniors. Again, kasi exhibition sports 'yun, we'll continue with that. So the add-on would be the ballroom dancing," said Ocampo.
"We'll continue with that. It was successful, 'yung 3-on-3," he added.
FEU ruled the men's division while NU swept the women's division of the inaugural UAAP 3x3 tournament in Season 80.
Ocampo also announced that they will be making changes in the league's sports calendar.
"There will be some events na second semester events, imo-move namin sa first semester. Like track and field, I think fencing, and chess. Second semester siya ngayon, so may request ang other board members kung pwede i-move sa second semester," said Ocampo.
"There are too many events sa second semester, so gusto nila ilagay sa first semester ang iba para equally distributed," he explained.
There are also plans to come out with a UAAP rule book that will be disseminated to the league's coaches.
NU is already working on themes for the new season, which is tentatively set to open on September 8, likely at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"We'll try and continue what FEU did," said Ocampo. "Dapat, walang controversy."
