UST Tiger Cubs claim last semis berth in UAAP juniors hoops

MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) nipped Adamson University, 73-72, in overtime to nab the last semifinals berth in the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

CJ Cansino scored eight of his 24 points in overtime, including the key basket with 1:13 left to give the Tiger Cubs a 73-68 lead that they nursed all the way to the final buzzer.

UST will face defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU)-Diliman in the knockout stepladder match on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the same Katipunan venue.

The Tiger Cubs won both of their games against the Baby Tamaraws in the elimination round.

The winner of the showdown will face twice-to-beat National University in the second phase of the stepladder semis next week.

The Ateneo Blue Eaglets are waiting in the finals, thanks to their sweep of the 14-game elimination round.

Cansino added nine rebounds, six assists, and two blocks for the Tiger Cubs. Kobe Palencia added 15 points, while John Lina had a double-double effort of 12 points and 12 rebounds for UST.

Jose Sabandal had 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for Adamson.
