A woman in her 40s in northern Japan has been swindled of some 2.5 million yen ($22,000) worth of bitcoin after being fooled into believing that she had won the right to trade the cryptocurrency through an automated system, police said Friday.

Last November, the woman from Hakodate in Hokkaido received an email on her mobile saying she had been selected as a winner of the right.

She ignored it at first but gave in to signing a purchase contract and paying after receiving a call from a man claiming to be an official of the system's sales company, according to the police.

The woman, who had experience of bitcoin trading, bought 2.5 million yen worth of the cryptocurrency, and transferred the sum to an account designated by the man a total of six times in payment for the putative right, the police said.
