MANILA - The super majority coalition in the House of Representatives will give its "full trust and confidence" in President Rodrigo Duterte as he calls for the extension of martial law in Mindanao, Deputy Speaker Gwendolyn Garcia said Tuesday.
"Sa mga congressmen, sa House of Representatives, our full trust and confidence in the wisdom ng ating Presidente, what is good for the country, ano ang nababagay at ano ang nararapat -- susuportahan iyun fully by the House of Representatives," Garcia told radio DZMM.
(For congressmen and for the House of Representatives, our full trust and confidence remain in the wisdom of the President on what is good for the country. The House of Representatives will fully support that.)
Duterte has called for a special joint session of Congress to consider the extension of martial rule in Mindanao, which lapses on Saturday, the 60th day after it was declared due to a terror attack in Marawi City.
The President reiterated the need for maintaining martial law when he met with some lawmakers in Malacañang late Monday, Garcia said.
"He even warned na hindi lang Marawi siguro ang possible place na magkakaroon ng sagupaan. Kasi itong ISIS (Islamic State) threat is everywhere," said the Cebu representative.
(He even warned that Marawi is not the only area where clashes may erupt because the ISIS threat is everywhere.)
As of July 9, the death toll in the Marawi crisis had reached at least 500, with at least 379 terrorists, 89 soldiers, and 39 civilians killed.
