Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Mujiv Hataman has expressed support for the new draft Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte, hoping that it will bring lasting peace in the region.

"Today, the regional government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao also reiterates its support to the ongoing peace process and its commitment to serve the Bangsamoro people. We’ve had countless moments of triumph in our collective struggle for our right to self-determination, and today marks another important milestone in our shared history," Hataman said in a statement.

According to Hataman, the proposed law should serve as a reminder for people of the costs of delaying peace efforts in Mindanao.

"This new proposed legislation comes at a time when we are reminded of the costs of delaying our efforts towards peace in the region, as we continue to hurdle old and familiar obstacles along with new challenges," he said.

"Delays in our collective struggle towards peace make it easy for fear to take root in the hearts of our people. Delays in our shared pursuit of justice make it easier for terror to thrive," he added.

Hataman, likewise, expressed hope that Duterte will use his state of the nation address (SONA) to push for legislation that will bring about "restorative justice and lasting peace in the region."

"We hope that the president will use this important platform to push for legislation that acknowledges and addresses the historical injustices committed against the Bangsamoro people, and to pursue restorative justice and lasting peace in the region," he said.

The Bangsamoro Transition Commission, led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), submitted on Monday its proposed BBL to Duterte, just a week before the President’s second State of the Nation Address, following the opening of the regular session of Congress.
