MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte's third State of the Nation Address will have a "patriotic" feel and a glimpse at the President's "psyche," director Joyce Bernal said Thursday as she went around the House of Representatives' plenary hall for an ocular visit.

Bernal, a known romantic-comedy film and television director, will direct the SONA for the first time, succeeding director Brillante Mendoza's back-to-back stints in 2016 and 2017.

"Let’s get into the psyche paano niya (Duterte) bibigay, ire-report 'yung nagawa niya at mga gagawin sa Pilipinas. Gusto ko lang na patriotic," Bernal told reporters.

(Let's get into the psyche on how he will deliver, report his achievements and plans for the Philippines. I just want it to be patriotic.)

"Iniisip ko 'yung pakiramdam paano [siya] magsasalita as mayor, as father, and as the president. Gusto nila [Palace officials] maramamdan 'yun," Bernal added.

(I am thinking about the feeling when he speaks as a mayor, as a father, and as a president. Palace officials want to feel that.)

The director said she intends to use "sequencing shots" and "warm lighting" to capture Duterte's patriotism on camera.

"I want it warm and very open sana. 'Yun po pinagaaralan namin kasi may limitations ang locations sa paglalagay [ng ilaw]," she said.

(I want it warm and very open. We're studying how to do that because there are limitations on lighting placements inside the location.)

The presentation of Duterte's past 2 SONAs drew mixed reactions as Mendoza combined lens flares and slow panning with extreme close-ups and worm's eye-view shots.
