MANILA - The ruling PDP-Laban is ready to accept Special Assistant to the President Bong Go in its Senate slate should he decide to run in the 2019 midterm polls.
Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, the party president, said Wednesday the party has yet to finalize its lineup and that the decision is in Go's hands if he wants to join them.
Go is among President Rodrigo Duterte's closest aides.
"Bong Go is our national auditor. Nasa sa kaniya na 'yun if he's really interested. The party is ready because we have not yet finalized the slots. Unfortunately, we have more than 20 names na," he said.
A group of government officials that included some Cabinet secretaries gathered earlier Wednesday to launch the campaign "#ReadySetGO" to urge Duterte's long-time aide to run for senator.
Pimentel said PDP-Laban was not behind the event, which was mounted by Go's supporters. He said party members would support Go whatever his final decision may be.
President Rodrigo Duterte himself said he would support Go should he decide to run for senator. The President's daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, also endorsed Go's run for the position earlier.
