ALEGRIA, Cebu - A 56-year-old man died after a coconut tree fell on him shortly before Tuesday midnight, at the height of rains caused by tropical depression Basyang.

The victim, Jenas Allonis, was seeking shelter under a bamboo-made waiting shed when the nearby coconut tree snapped in half and fell on him.

Allonis' brother, Emilio, said the victim usually spends the night in the nearby waiting shed. He said he advised his brother against going out that night because of the storm.

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office spokesperson Julius Regner confirmed the casualty.

Alegria had the most number of evacuees in the province during the height of the storm.
