MANILA - Singer and theater actor Nyoy Volante is leading the cast of Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group's production of the award-winning musical "Kinky Boots."

Volante expressed his excitement over his newest project, which was offered to him last year.

He will play the role of Simon/Lola, a drag queen who is in need of some sturdy stilettos.

"Around last year, while doing 'Jersey Boys,' they kinda hinted that they wanted me to do Lola. Of course, I said 'yes' because one, you don't say no to Atlantis, you don't want to. Number 2, if anyone knows me, they would know that I take on a challenge and have fun doing it. Third, anything that's out of my character, anything like that, that's going to label me as a crazy person, a rebel or someone who's fun doing some crazy stuff, so yes, I am very excited," he said in an interview on Friday.

"Very excited and very happy. I think a lot of people are also excited for me," he added.

Volante said he is thrilled to see himself transforming into Lola. He said he might be working with his wife, Mikkie Bradshaw, for his makeup.

"Magiging boy-girl, boy-girl ako rito so you know, 'yun 'yung mahirap because 'yung transition ng one makeup to another," he said.

"I think our director has hired her (Bradshaw) to do my makeup because she's great with makeup. So I think she's going to help me with that."

Aside from Volante, Atlantis' "Kinky Boots" will also feature Laurence Mossman as Charlie Price and Yanah Laurel as Lauren, a factory worker.

Also part of the cast are Tricia Canilao, Nel Gomez, Christine Flores, Sarah Facuri, Steven Cionde, Rhenwyn Gabalonzo, Ron Gohel, Jill Peña, Japs Treopaldo and Juancho Escoto.

Featured as the angels are Ritz Beltran, Jorge Jahnke, Michael Jahnke, Jazztin Cacayan, Mark Pineda and Gerhard Krysstopher.

A winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, "Kinky Boots" features a score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.

Directed by Bobby Garcia, the local production of the musical will open on June 30 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at RCBC Plaza, Makati.
