With the opening of the 2018-2019 school year next week, students and parents are once again scouring bookstores and shops for school supplies that will fit their budget.

In 2015, one could buy 10 basic school items on a budget of P139. Will that budget be enough this year?

Using the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) annual bulletin of suggested retail prices (SRPs) for school supplies (“Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies”), the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group computed the average SRPs of the 10 school materials on DTI’s list from 2015-2018 for different brands with the same unit (e.g., notebooks with 80 leaves, a 16-piece box of crayons). The average prices were then summed up to get the total price of a typical bag of school supplies in those years.

The 2015 base price of P139 for a typical bag of 10 school supplies was used to compute the real prices—or the nominal prices adjusted for inflation—over the last four years, taking into account the price changes in the same period.

The rise and fall in real prices of school supplies are illustrated in this interactive infographic.
