Jake Zyrus' grandmother has shared what she told her apo at his concert Friday that nearly brought the singer to tears.
Tess Relucio, Zyrus' lola, was part of the crowd that flocked to the Music Museum to support her grandson's first major concert since coming out as a transgender man.
Relucio sang with him parts of "Maghintay Ka Lamang," a song Zyrus dedicated to his family, and, speaking after the affair, the grandmother told ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe that she whispered just one thing to her apo.
"Iisa lang ang sinasabi ko sa kanya. Kasi noong maliit siya ay lagi niyang sinasabi na idol niya ako. Ako, hindi marunong umiyak. Palaban ako. Kaya sabi ko sa kanya, ayaw kong iiyak ka."
The emotional moment was caught on camera and saw Zyrus nearly breaking down in tears mid-performance after hearing his grandmother's words.
The advice should mean a lot for the singer, who has been facing criticism from fans for shunning his Charice self.
Zyrus, in an interview with Felipe, said it felt "surreal" to see his family with his fans cheering him on, especially since his lola was once a vocal critic of his decision to shed Charice.
Recalling the moment he went down the concert stage to approach his lola, Zyrus said: "First time ko lang makita siya ulit after how many years so parang hindi ako makapaniwala."
"Parang tumigil iyong mundo ko for how many minutes kasi sumakit iyong ulo --pero in a good way.
"Nabigla kasi ako. Iba sa feeling kasi ever since na hindi maayos iyong family ko, parang ilang concerts na iyong lumipas na wala sila. So nanibago ako na nandiyan iyong tita ko at lola ko."
He also revealed that he has begun reaching out to his uncles and aunts from the Pempengco side, whom he hasn't spoken to since his father's murder. "Sabi noong isang tita ko ay kung buhay daw si daddy, he'll be very proud," he said.
