LAOAG CITY - In line with the celebration of International Women's Month, more than 2,000 women joined a parade in Laoag City Monday morning.

Most of the participants were members of the council of women from the different barangays of the city.

Men also took part in the event. One group caught the attention of people after they were seen wearing high heels during the parade.

One of the male participants, Markvin Mariano, said that for him, wearing high heels during the parade is a way to support women.

He said women should be loved, protected, and respected.

Others who also joined the parade were members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

According to Laoag City Mayor Chevylle Farinas, the event is for everybody, regardless of gender.

"Nagpapasalamat ako kasi hindi lamang mga katulad kong babae ang pumunta pati mga lalaki. There were some na nag-high heels para sumuporta and LGBT also joined us. So, more than giving tribute siguro sa mga katulad nating babae, it is also to show that in the city, everybody is accepted," the mayor said.

After the parade, a program was held wherein groups of women showcased their talent in dancing.

Laoag City Local Council for Women president Mary Ang said women's personality and talent nowadays are being celebrated and appreciated.

"We celebrate the personality of a woman, hindi na katulad noon na nahuhuli o natatapakan o nawawala. Today, now, a sign that woman has improved through empowerment," Ang said.
