Passengers can lodge a complaint against a Chinese airline after its plane skidded off the runway at the country's main airport, leading to flight disruption and chaotic scenes, an official said Sunday.

"Puwede naman po basta ma-substantiate mo iyung claim mo sa airline na iyun," said Atty. Wyrlou Samodio, OIC deputy executive director of the Civil Aeronautics Board.

(That is an option, as long as you can substantiate your claim against that airline.)

A Xiamen Airlines plane landed on its second attempt at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport before skidding onto the grass late Thursday evening, ripping off its left engine and blocking the runway.

All 157 passengers and 8 crew aboard the Boeing 737-800 were unharmed.

The accident, however, led to the cancellation and delay of hundreds of flights, forcing travelers to wait in long queues outside the terminals and at check-in desks.

Airlines should provide food to passengers of flights delayed for at least 3 hours, as well as offer flight rebooking or refund, Samodio told radio DZMM.

An investigation into Thursday's accident was underway. Airport officials said they were looking at several factors, including bad weather on Thursday night and communications between the pilot and control tower. -- With a report from Reuters
