MANILA - The Metro Manila Development Authority said Friday it asked mall operators to maintain their operating hours from the last Christmas holidays to help ease traffic.

Shopping malls opened at 11 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. last month to help ease traffic jams. Some have reverted to their pre-holiday schedules.

Vehicle speeds in the capital increased by 10 percent during the adjusted mall hours, said MMDA Spokesperson Celine Pialago.

“Effective po ito, so pinapakiusapan natin ulit ang mga mall kung maaring ipagpatuloy natin ito,” Pialago told DZMM.

(This has been effective, that's why we are appealing again to the malls if they can continue this.)

Pialago said mall operators reported a decrease in sales due to the change in business hours.

“Sa parte na lang ng MMDA humihingi kami ng figures kung gaano kalaki ang naging epekto sa kanila, magme-meet kami half way after that,” she said.

(On the part of the MMDA, we are asking for figures, how this has affected then so we can meet halfway after that.)
